A cough can occur as a result of an obstruction of the air in the nasal passages. These obstructions are as a result of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that act as irritants. Coughing can be done either voluntarily or involuntarily. In most cases, it is done involuntarily to convey a signal to the individual while exceptional cases exist when the individual willingly decides to cough.

Irregular coughs are caused by the lack of adequate air and oxygen, a condition known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). A cough can be caused by acute bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, allergies, and emphysema. Research has revealed that there are various natural cough remedies for patients who suffer from the condition.

Honey is one of the most recommended home remedies for the treatment of coughs. It has been regarded as a very good cough suppressant because of the presence of antibacterial content in the thick-liquid fluid. Its sweetness is as a result of the sugar from monosaccharide and disaccharides. Honey is made by bees. It is more effective as a cough remedy when mixed with lemon.

Peppermint is another cure for the treatment of this condition. The flavor is normally used in home made products such as toothpaste, sweeteners and holiday treats. Peppermint, also known Mentha piperita, is a plant that is borne out of the cross breeding of spearmint and water mint respectively. It is an antibacterial agent and a stimulant. It can be chewed fresh, prepared as tea, or bought from the medical stores. The methanol content is useful in breaking down mucus and hence, soothes the throat.

Thyme is also very useful in treating cough patients. The thymol in thyme fights against microorganisms in the mouth. These micro-organisms such as the bacteria, fungi, and viruses are responsible for tooth decay and unpleasant odor in the mouth. Thyme also reduces the risks of many respiratory problems such as bronchitis, and asthma. They are also rich in flavonoids which are antioxidants.

Ginger is an underground stem and a popular food seasoning which has been considered to be a very useful remedy for the treatment of coughs. It contains various chemicals which specifically work in the intestines to reduce nausea and inflammation. It is often used to soothe the soft throat and reduce a persistent cough. Its oil can be mixed with other lemons for quick treatment and recovery.

Allium Sativum or garlic is rich in antibacterial and antimicrobial contents. It is from the onion family and has been considered useful in making the throat and the membrane lubricated. Garlic cloves are eaten raw or cooked. It also contains vital nutrients that help to fight against respiratory problems and lowers the risks of stomach cancers.

Grapes are also effective natural sources for the ailment. The juice from grapes acts as mucolytic expectorants. Mucolytic expectorant lightens the phlegm and makes an individual cough out a congested accumulation of debris. Grapes contain rich sources of vitamin A, B and C and are beneficial for relieving cold.
