Addiction is a terrible affliction and almost always affect everyone around the person addicted to substance. Lots of smokers will readily admit that they are aware of the dangers of their habit. They will even admit that their smoke smells terrible and that it is selfish to smoke in the company of other people. They admit that they spend a fortune on their habit. There are even psychological programs specifically designed to help people get rid of the habit.

As with all addictions, no method or technique will work unless the addicted person admits that he has a problem and expresses the desire for assistance. Only then can positive action be taken. It may be advisable to see a general practitioner before embarking upon any specific program to quit the habit. Once a program or course of action has been decided upon, it is vital that such a person is supported and encouraged by his friends and family.

Smokers have a shorter lifespan than non smokers. They are more likely to develop serious life threatening diseases. Their habit is anti social and frowned upon in modern society. These are all very good reasons for every smoker to do whatever is necessary to quit.
